Becoming a board director is a journey of personal fulfilment, growth and meaning. Stepping into a board director role requires more than experience or knowledge – it requires a clear strategy, a compelling value proposition and a deep understanding of how to position yourself. Realising board opportunities is not just about what you know, but how well you can articulate the value you bring. This workshop uses the 4R learning methodology of Reflect-Reveal-Reimagine-Reach to provide an immersive experience for you to uncover your purpose and value for directorship. It also supports you with insights from experienced directors.

SPEAKERS

Frank Koo
Founder and CEO, Nextplay

Mr Frank Koo is a qualified trainer and coach and focuses on developing leaders with the right mindset, skills and commitment to excel in their work and life. Mr Koo currently serves on the board of the Institute for Human Resource Professionals and the National Integration Council. He is also a member of the Corporate Member Engagement Committee of SID.  Prior to that, Mr Koo was the Head of Asia at LinkedIn and responsible for LinkedIn’s Talent and Learning business. He also held leadership roles in BE Education (Chief Operating Officer), Pearson Education (President of Learning Solutions) and Oracle (Managing Director for Singapore and South Asia). 

Wong Su-Yen
Immediate Past Chair, SID

Ms Wong Su-Yen is an experienced board chair and independent director who has served for over 15 years on the boards of multiple companies and not-for-profit organisations in Australia, Asia and the US. She has experience in business strategy, human capital development and organisation transformation. She is chairperson of James Cook University Singapore and independent director at CDL, CSE Global and First Resources. She also serves on the boards of Kemin Industries and Infocomm Media Development Authority. A former chair of the Singapore Institute of Directors, she is an adjunct professor of leadership at the National University of Singapore Business School and an active member of the Young Presidents’ Organisation.

Karen Loon, FSID
SID Governing Council

Ms Karen Loon is a non-executive director of for-profit and nonprofit organisations in Singapore. She is a Council member of the Singapore Institute of Directors (SID), and a non-executive director of SGX RegCo and James Cook University, Singapore Campus. She was previously a board member of Bank Pictet & Cie (Asia) Ltd and INSEAD Directors Network, and a committee member of BoardAgender. A former Financial Services (Assurance) partner, Banking and Capital Leader, and Territory Diversity Leader at PwC Singapore, she holds corporate governance qualifications from SID, INSEAD, and the Australian Institute of Company Directors. She has a Master of Business Administration, an Executive Master in Change and a graduate diploma in finance. She is also a published author and thought leader on diversity.

 

 Howie Lau, MSID
SID Governing Council

Mr Howie Lau is a seasoned technology veteran with over three decades of experience across Asia, Eastern Europe, Middle East and Latin America. He is Managing Partner, Chief Corporate Development and Synergy Officer at NCS Group, and oversees the business for China and Hong Kong. Prior to this, he was the Assistant Chief Executive of Infocomm Media Development Authority of Singapore. He was previously the Chief Marketing Officer and head of consumer business at StarHub, and held leadership positions in Lenovo and IBM. He serves on a number of boards and advisory committees. He has been recognised as IT leader of the Year (2020) by Singapore Computer Society, and received the Philip Kotler marketing excellence award (2018) and NUS outstanding alumni award (2009).


Audrey Ong
President (Chair), Singapore Gymnastics

Ms Audrey Ong is Managing Director, Transformation & Innovation at Keppel Ltd, where she leads enterprise initiatives in AI, digital transformation and innovation. Her board journey began as an appointed director at Singapore Gymnastics, where she served on the fundraising committee before being elected to a four-year term. During her tenure, she chaired the Governance Committee, served as Vice President, and in 2026 was appointed President of the association. Through these roles, she has gained firsthand experience in governance, stakeholder management, strategy, and organizational stewardship. Beyond Singapore Gymnastics, Audrey serves as Vice Chair of the Smart Nation Chapter at SGTech and previously contributed on the IT Committee of Beyond Social Services. Recognized in the Singapore 100 Women in Tech list (2025) and as part of the SG Digital Leaders 2026 cohort, Audrey brings a practitioner’s perspective on bridging executive leadership and board governance.
