CLN 1: The Board on Strategy: Unlocking Value

This session is an intensive and interactive boardroom programme on the board’s role in strategy, with particular emphasis on Value Unlocking as the imperative.


Anchored on JP Wilson’s proprietary “Ascend” model and a structured framing of board-level strategy, the programme guides participants through the three decision levers that most consistently separate value-creating boards from value-eroding ones:

  1. Strategy Formulation – It begins with clear-eyed choice cognisance, trade-off acceptance, and business model design.
  2. Innovation Governance – A focus on governing innovation as a deliberate source of new value and directing capital allocation with the portfolio discipline to invest, divest, and decline. 
  3. Stewardship – These decisions are examined through a board stewardship lens, emphasising oversight, judgment, capital discipline, and the board’s role in shaping sustainable value.

Course Objectives

  1. Distinguish the board's role from management's in strategy, and articulate where directors add the greatest strategic value.
  2. Diagnose board effectiveness in strategy by identifying the conditions that enable or undermine strategic clarity.
  3. Apply the JP Wilson "Ascend" model to formulate strategy at the board level, with disciplined attention to strategic choice, trade-off acceptance, and business model design.
  4. Govern innovation as a value lever by overseeing innovation pipelines, recognising value derivatives, and identifying credible innovation opportunities without descending into management territory.
  5. Direct capital allocation with portfolio discipline – making clear-eyed decisions on investment, divestment, and the discipline of saying no.

Wilson Chew
Chair, J.P. Wilson 

Dr Wilson Chew is the Chair at J.P. Wilson, a Southeast Asia growth and transaction strategy firm for private clients. He was the former lead partner for strategy at the Entrepreneurial and Private Clients practice of PwC. Wilson spent over 20 years in enterprise growth strategy, served over 200 entrepreneur and family-led companies, and led 140 strategy engagements including 12 public listings in Asia, 26 private transactions and two national scale-up initiatives with the Singapore Government. He served as Chair for the Fortrec Group, Deputy Chair of National Arthritis Foundation and Independent Director of Swee Hong.
