SGOOD
This concluding module explores the trends in the areas of social innovation, social media, social enterprises and other trends impacting the social sector through a series of presentations and a panel discussion. It will provide participants with ideas on the horizon and help them examine their roles in a rapidly changing world where there is a blurring of boundaries between for-profit and nonprofit sectors.

 

Course Objectives

  1. Investigate the trends in social innovations, technologies and enterprises that can improve the effectiveness of nonprofit organisations.
  2. Understand the developments in the social enterprise sector and the impact on the nonprofit sector and funders’ motivations.
  3. Explore social Innovations including the impact of fintech on addressing social needs.
  4. Examine the role of the board in directing and supporting the nonprofit organisation through the use of various social media as a tool for social change, engagement and outreach.

All exempt, registered charities and Institutions of a Public Character (IPCs) can apply for the Charities Capability Funding [CCF] , submit to NCSS and subject to approval.

SPEAKERS

Steve Loh
Executive Director, Lien Centre for Social Innovation

Mr Steve Loh is the Executive Director of the Lien Centre for Social Innovation at the Singapore Management University (SMU). He is passionate about serving the community. Before his appointment at SMU, he was the Chief Executive Officer at the YMCA of Singapore. He has a decade of leadership experience with non-governmental organisations. He served as a director of Youth with a Mission Training and Medical Ships and CEO of Mercy Centre. An avid entrepreneur, he founded and managed Scribe Media before working for Transworld International as a senior producer/presenter.

Choo Jin Kiat
Executive Director, O’Joy Limited

Mr Choo Jin Kiat joined O’Joy Care Services in 2005, after 15 years in the factory automation/semiconductor equipment manufacturing industry. Since 2011, he has focused on O’Joy’s work on the integration of social, health and community sectors. He has also introduced the Lean thinking management framework to improve efficiency and productivity of such integrations. To increase O’Joy’s impact across all levels of the society, he has also leveraged on technology to empower seniors to age well in the community. Together with his board, he has been at the forefront in exploring organisational sustainability through enterprise in the areas of companionship, home nursing, counselling and therapy.

 Vincent Lim
Board member, HCSA and NCSS

Mr Vincent Lim is a Senior VP in Siemens, heading one of its Asia Pacific business divisions. He has been an active volunteer since his youth and served for over a decade in grassroots programmes in Teck Ghee PAP Community Foundation in the Ang Mo Kio GRC. In 2002 he joined the HighPoint (now part of HCSA Community Services) Management Committee for its halfway house for men ex-offenders. He was HCSA Board President (2014 to 2019). In 2008, Mr Lim played a leading role for his then-employer Cisco Systems in the first weeks of the Sichuan post-earthquake recovery. He subsequently led the company’s Smart & Connected Community strategic collaboration with the Chengdu government. He has more than 30 years of experience in tech companies including IBM, Oracle, Microsoft, Cisco Systems and Hewlett Packard.

May Loh
Chairman, The Helping Hand

Ms May Loh is a Senior Advisor with the Albright Stonebridge Group and Conservation International (Asia Pacific). With a vision to see capital used for purposeful and lasting social change, Ms Loh is Chairman of the Governing Board of The Helping Hand, a halfway house, and serves on various boards of nonprofit organisations including the Board of Trustees of the Singapore University of Technology and Design, Youth Guidance Outreach Services and Credit Counselling Singapore. An alumnus of Harvard Law (LLM), she was with the Singapore Legal Service before leaving in 2018 to pursue her interests in sustainability and governance.
