Course description

This session is the first module in the Governance for Outstanding Organisation Directors (SGOOD) Programme. It provides participants with a macro perspective of the nonprofit ecosystem: the structure, major players, applicable regulations and policy priorities. This session seeks to impart an understanding of the practical implications of the duties and workings of the nonprofit board and its directors.

Course objectives

  1. Examine the nonprofit landscape in Singapore, the implications for nonprofit governance and how it differs from that of commercial organisations.
  2. Understand the nonprofit board structure and its role.
  3. Differentiate between conformance and performance.
  4. Understand the “head and heart” of a nonprofit leader.

  1. Overview of Singapore’s nonprofit sector.
  2. Charities and board governance.
  3. Conformance vs performance.
  4. The “head and heart” of the nonprofit director.
  5. Community partner sharing and group discussion.
  6. Case study.
  7. Panel discussion.

Target audience

Aspiring, new and current directors of nonprofit organisations.

Half day.

Presentation with case studies, followed by panel discussion and Q&A.

This course is subject to approval for the Charities Capability Fund (CCF) training grant. All exempt, registered charities and Institutions of a Public Character can apply for CCF funding. Registration is on a first-come-first-served basis, with priority to CCF-funded applicants.
