Accreditation

To complement SID’s professional development offerings, the SID Accreditation Programme was launched to elevate the standards of corporate governance among company directors in Singapore. This programme provides a structured pathway for directors to enhance their competencies through a formal exam and continuous professional development (CPD), in the form of training, self-improvement and other forms of learning activities. The accreditation programme is designed to support the professional development of directors of all organisations, whether listed entities, statutory boards, private companies, family firms, high-growth ventures or nonprofit organisations.

Eligible SID members who successfully fulfil the requirements of an accreditation process will be able to add “Accredited Director” to their credentials or “Senior Accredited Director” if they have more than five years of relevant directorship experience. Learn more here.

The SID Director Accreditation programme supports SID’s mission to uplift the directorship profession by:

  • Establishing standards for director competency
  • Providing directors with structured development pathways to acquire essential knowledge, proficiency, and attributes.
  • Enabling directors to stay relevant over time through continuous professional development.
  • Communicating director competencies to boards looking to appoint directors.

The Standards and Exams Board reviews and sets standards for the accreditation exam to ensure the SID Director Accreditation programme has rigour, integrity, validity and currency.

Directorship Journey

The accreditation programme is designed to support the professional development of directors of all organisations, whether listed entities, statutory boards, private companies, family firms, high-growth ventures or nonprofit organisations.

A director might start by building up foundational knowledge by attending formal training covering each of the eight competencies. The director could subsequently earn badges by taking up supplementary modules to gain knowledge and proficiency specific to board roles, functional expertise and organisation type.

For example, a director serving on nonprofit board might complement the core modules with badges in volunteer management or fundraising. Another director of a listed entity would need to acquire the badges that come with the completion of programmes mandated by Singapore Exchange Regulation for first-time directors.

By meeting the programme’s continuous professional development requirements, directors will remain current and relevant when performing the role of a board director.
